Chapter 4

The Crypts

While they carefully walked down the side passage, the smell changed from spider to something else. The odor was new to the ponies, but Arvid recognized it. He could smell the dead resting in their alcoves. He hoped they wouldn’t wake up. Arvid led the way down the stairs into the crypts. Twilight ran over to an alcove that just had a skeleton in it. Fluttershy did not like the crypts. The smell and look of the brown, pitted, aged walls and floor just made her nervous. Arvid was getting bored, but he knew better than to rush around without someone watching his back.

“Twilight, c-c-can we go now?” Fluttershy asked nervously. She looked around expecting to be attacked any second.

“Yes, let us go,” Arvid said with boredom.

Twilight reluctantly tore herself away from studying the skeleton. Fluttershy could see that Twilight wanted to take the dusty old bones with her. Seeing the skeletons just made Fluttershy wish she was back home. After a few seconds, Twilight rejoined the group.

A few steps further, they found the man they rescued from the webs. It seemed that he stepped on a trap and a spiked wall impaled him. Blood was still dripping from some of the rusty spikes.  The sight made the group pause.

Even Arvid’s thirst for adventure was reduced for a bit. His smile faded to a look of disgust. Being killed by a trap wasn’t one of the ways he wanted to go to Sovngarde. Being killed by a spiked wall was not heroic. The grisly scene made Twilight step back for a second then she took one step forward. This place was full of danger, but it was full of things to study. She wondered how to balance her burning curiosity with caution.

The stink of shed blood made Fluttershy’s stomach churn, but she managed to keep her breakfast down. Not for the last time she wished to be back home. Fluttershy didn’t know too much about crypts and traps, but she felt that something else happened to distract the unlucky man. She had no problems seeing the pressure plate. Arvid grunted as he pulled the body back with Twilight's help. He went through the man's pockets and read his journal. Fluttershy looked around to see if anything else was coming.

“Well? What does the journal say?” Twilight asked.

“This man is a thief, and he stole this claw from a store in Riverwood. The dragon claw is a key that opens an area that has treasure,” Arvid said with a speculative look in his eye. He pulled out a golden dragon’s claw from the dead thief’s pocket so Twilight and Fluttershy could see it, then he pocketed the item. The gold was split three ways. Even though the claw key was pretty, Fluttershy had read enough adventure stories and knew treasure would not be lying around just to be picked up. Something nasty would be there guarding it.

“You do realize that there will probably be something guarding that treasure, right?” Twilight said with caution. She looked at Arvid.

“Yeah, but I have you two, my friends to help me,” Arvid said, a wide smile covered his face. Twilight looked at Fluttershy. Fluttershy looked back.

“Please!” A petulant expression crossed his face.

“If this treasure area is not far away and we are in good shape, we will give it a try,” Twilight said grudgingly.

“Really?” Fluttershy said with fear. After that giant spider, she was losing interest in the whole affair. Arvid smiled and hugged his quest-mates.

“Can we, um, move on now?” Fluttershy said with annoyance.

That hug was just a bit too tight. His smile was not exactly a brotherly one, either. It was close to what a frisky stallion would give her. If Arvid was a pony, maybe, but Fluttershy still found humans to be too strange. The too-long hug ended. Arvid looked away and drew his greatsword. He stepped carefully over the trap's pressure plate. They carefully passed the pressure plate to another area of the crypt. Here, there were dead bodies that looked like grayish-brown withered people. These were not as old as the skeletons. Twilight walked up to one lying in a niche to study it when the dead person sat up.

“Oh my,” Fluttershy said with surprise. She stepped back carefully and got an arrow ready to shoot. Fluttershy wondered if these were the draugur that Hadvar talked about. Dead people with most of their flesh still on them, yes, these are Draugur, Fluttershy thought.

Arvid clutched his greatsword tighter. Twilight was so surprised, she did not have a spell ready. Fluttershy could not shoot because Twilight was still in her way. Arvid moved toward the draugur. Twilight could hear more of the creatures waking up and moving toward her.

Fluttershy warned,”Twilight, you need to run to me.” She wondered if they would survive this.

At last, Twilight was out of the way. Fluttershy fired her arrow at the standing dead creature. The arrow missed, but Arvid slashed and connected with the draugur. Two more draugur came toward them. One had a great sword and the other one had a sword and shield. It started banging its sword against the shield to call for more reinforcements. The clanging noise echoed through the crypts. Fluttershy carefully backed up, and avoided the pressure plate. Twilight managed to do the same. Arvid took out one of the advancing undead with a slash that sent its head flying. He ran to the pressure plate then he stepped over it. Three draugur were right behind him. He barely had gotten clear of the trap when one of the draugur stepped on the plate and activated it. There was a sickening crunch of bones snapping and swords and shields hitting the ground. Arvid stepped to the side.

Another draugur stepped forward, but it avoided the trap and shot a blast of freezing air at Fluttershy. The blast of cold felt like a spear had been thrust into Fluttershy's chest. It was so hard to breathe with her lungs almost frozen; her vision started to dim. Twilight hit the creature with a stream of fire from her left hand. It stopped attacking Fluttershy and fired a blast of cold air at Twilight. For a second, flames and frost fought for dominance until Arvid stuck his great sword through the chest of the mage draugur. The stream of frost faded along with the blue glow from its eyes.

“Fluttershy!” Twilight cried as she saw her friend lying on the floor gasping for air. Twilight used a Heal Other healing spell on Fluttershy, and the gasping slowed down to normal breathing.

After a few minutes, Fluttershy got up and looked around. “Is it...” Fluttershy asked.

“Yes,” Twilight replied with a nod.

Now, they knew what happened to the thief. The draugur scared him, and he stepped on the plate by accident when he was retreating. Fluttershy and Twilight followed Arvid into the area beyond the trap. He swapped his greatsword for one that the draugur were using because the blade looked sharper. Fluttershy looked at the silvery edge of the sword and got a chill. This time, no one approached the alcoves where the dead lay. They took some more stairs down. A few steps from the stairs was a large wooden door bound with iron around the edges.

“I need to rest a bit,” Fluttershy said. She felt like there were still ice crystals in her chest.

After a few minutes, they opened the door. Behind it was a large hall with a locked door at the other end. This door had three moveable rings, covered with carvings of animals, and a keyhole. Twilight walked up to the door. Arvid looked at the gold claw and the rings. Twilight and Fluttershy watched as he selected the symbols on the rings so they matched the ones on the claw. Then Arvid put the claw into the keyhole. They could hear clunking noises as the door started to move downwards. Bits of rock fell as the door slid down through the floor. Fluttershy hoped there would not be another one of those mage draugur waiting on the other side.

What was on the other side was greenery and light. Ferns and other plants grew on the floor of the cavern. There were enough holes in the roof so the cavern was well lit. Golden shafts of sunlight shone down to the floor. In front of them was a small bridge over a splashing brook. Far in the background was a large stone wall with some sort of carved runes on it. A large stone coffin rested in front of the wall.

“Fluttershy, can you fly around and see if there are any threats here?” Twilight asked while looking around. Arvid nodded. Fluttershy walked into the cavern and unfurled her wings then she took off.

It seemed like a pretty nice place filled with flowers and plants that smelled good. This was better than the dusty, dead-filled crypt. So far, Fluttershy could not see any enemies or problems. There was even a chest to check out and stairs leading up. She flew around the area one more time to make sure there were no threats. Then she flew back to Arvid and Twilight.

“No draugur or other enemies spotted!” Fluttershy announced.

    “Are you sure?” Twilight asked.

Fluttershy nodded. She had a smile on her face.

Arvid started to walk to the bridge, but Twilight made him stop. “Be careful,” she said to Arvid. He led the way to the stone wall. Arvid stopped in front of it.

“Ahh! The Voices!” He said with awe and then froze up.

The grey stone coffin opened up with a loud CRACK! A draugur wearing a helmet with horns climbed out of the coffin and faced Twilight. Fluttershy flew up to the ceiling. She got an arrow ready. Before Twilight could do anything, the draugur roared and she went flying through the air. A pang went through Fluttershy’s heart when she saw what happened to Twilight. Fluttershy shot an arrow at the undead creature and it hit. The draugur looked upward and shook its black greatsword in anger at Fluttershy. She flew over to the side in case the creature roared again. Fluttershy shot another arrow but it missed. A quick glance at the ground showed Twilight was not moving. Arvid was still standing in front of the curved wall. Fluttershy knew she had to distract the creature so it would not attack Arvid or Twilight. The draugur turned and approached Arvid. She flew down and ran at the undead creature. It did not hear her coming, and Fluttershy got a chance to slash the draugur. That caused the draugur to hiss and turn around quickly. Fluttershy found herself on the end of a fast flurry of blows from the irate creature.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Three good hits on her shield caused her left arm to go numb. That made it easier to not feel the other hard hits. She managed some stabs that connected, but most of the time the draugur was doing the striking. Fluttershy concentrated on making sure the draugur did not kill her. Then it stopped attacking and stood still for a second. She unfurled her wings and flew up in one quick motion. The draugur roared, but it missed Fluttershy by scant inches.

Why won’t this thing go down, she wondered. Fluttershy swooped down to try to decapitate the draugur, but it ducked at the last moment. She flew around for another attack, but Arvid swung at the draugur and hit it first. The creature turned to face this new threat, and Fluttershy saw Arvid fighting a creature who was really good with a greatsword. He was holding his own, though, barely. Several bolts of flame hit the draugur, and made it stagger a bit.

The draugur stopped and Fluttershy swooped down on it. At the worst possible moment, it turned its head and roared at her. The shout hit her like a brick wall, and Fluttershy was blasted back. She fell to the fern-covered floor with a thump that raised some dust and rattled her teeth. Arvid and Twilight saw that the enemy was distracted. Fluttershy got up from her leafy bed, her muscles ached, but she managed to get to her hooves and look around.

She could see that neither Twilight nor Arvid could handle the draugur alone. Twilight cast some more firebolts at the creature, but Arvid seemed to have problems. The draugur was pushing him back to the wall. The situation was dire; there was not enough space for him to dodge attacks. It would be very easy for the draugur to kill him. Fluttershy shot some arrows at the enemy, she hoped that her arrows could slow it down. Melee fighting did not seem to work for her. Two arrows sprouted from the side of the enraged creature, but it ignored them. She fired more arrows at the Draugur but they also had little effect. The creature just kept trying to kill Arvid. He looked good for a bit until the draugur knocked his sword out of his hand. Only a quick duck and roll saved Arvid from being skewered. Twilight hit the creature with some firebolts and set it aflame, but it did not fall.

Fluttershy could see that unless she did something, her friends were going to die in front of her. Rage grew in her heart. Fluttershy's eyes were narrowed, and a look of fury covered her face as she pulled out her sword. She stormed up to the draugur and dodged its slash. Fluttershy shoved her sword into the creature's chest. When she could not pull it out, she just pushed the now-dead draugur away and started kicking it. After every kick, there was a howl of anger.

Arvid and Twilight traded glances as they watched Fluttershy’s show of vehemence. After a few minutes of kicking and howling, the rage slowly faded. Pain filled Fluttershy’s body and she started to stagger. Arvid rushed over and caught Fluttershy before she fell to the floor. Twilight was ready with some Heal Other spells to heal her wounds. When Fluttershy recovered, she saw the pieces of the draugur lying all over the ground. It made her happy enough to squee!

She followed Arvid and Twilight to the big ornate chest.

“What happened to you when you stood at the wall?” Twilight asked with curiosity while she peered at the carved runes.

“I heard voices chanting. Then a Word entered my mind. I do not know what that means,” Arvid looked uncomfortable.

He opened the chest to inspect the contents. There was the grey carved stone that Farengar wanted and some other items inside. Fluttershy got a new shield; her old one was too bashed up to be useful anymore. After that they climbed up the age-worn stairs. After a half hour later while they slogged up more time worn stairs, Arvid laughed.

“What is so funny?” Twilight asked.

“I am still amazed how Fluttershy slew the Draugur Lord,” Arvid said. Fluttershy tried to remember what she did, and was dismayed to find out most of her memories were a red tinged blur. She could remember being hit by the roar of the undead thing. A thought suggested that she had been possessed again. Fluttershy dismissed that thought. When she was possessed, she saw and remembered everything. That led to the depressing thought that something was wrong with her. Maybe she wondered, she was becoming a monster?

“Um, Twilight, I don’t remember how I slew the Draugur lord,” Fluttershy said.

Twilight stopped and looked back at Fluttershy, “Really? You were very angry. The Draugur lord didn’t have a chance.”

Fluttershy looked down,”I don’t remember.” Her tail and ears drooped.

Arvid looked back, “Why are you so sad? Being a Berserker is quite an honor. Those who are able to channel the rage and strength of a Bear become mighty heroes!”

A bit of anger surfaced in Fluttershy’s voice,”I don’t want to be a mighty hero. I just want to go home!”

Twilight and Arvid just faced forward, they had no answer for that statement. After a few minutes they continued up the stairs. Fluttershy struggled with her worries. The idea that she might become some sort of half pony half bear creature scared her. Right on the heels of that thought was another strange thought. The fact that she had to draw on some sort of strange power inside her to help her friends did not make her feel better. The quest came very close to failing before she did things that she barely remembered. Twilight’s mentioning of her squeeing while looking at the bits of the draugur also seemed to point at her change into something terrible. Fluttershy doubted that it was the behavior of a normal pony.

Those and more gloomy thoughts filled Fluttershy’s head as she climbed the winding stairs with Twilight and Arvid.

Read the whole thing. Awesome battle. It was all written in one tense. Just that one sentence I pointed out earlier looked different from the rest. I'll move on to 5 once you see these comments.
